The first step of modernization is moving your hodge-podge legacy system to a
normalized environment. As we learned in Y2K, there are over 500 languages in use in
legacy systems.
In
practice, when we refer to normalized environments, we are referring to an application
with an SQL database, written in COBOL for MVS, and with a standardized teleprocessing
monitor, such as CICS.
Although
an argument can be made that a more powerful configuration may be possible, it is
important to point out that the key factor of normalization is standardization.
It must be remembered that the goal of modernizing existing legacy applications is
deployment to the Web, not improving the functionality of the application. If the goal is
improved functionality, other options such as a rewrite or the purchase of a pre-packaged
application may be more appropriate for those needs. Modernizing legacy applications is a
solution best geared towards applications that adequately fit existing business needs. |

| Forecross has been in the automated migration
business for nearly two decades, with many of our past and present customers being Fortune
500 companies. This extensive experience with parsers and code generators give us the most
comprehensive software redeployment technology available today. Also, our fully automated
Factory technology automates up to 100% of the conversion, thus reducing the cost, risk
and time when compared to other solutions. In
addition, our TestSentinel product provides unprecedented automated equivalence testing,
proving the integrity of your migrated applications to an extent hitherto impractical. At
the heart of this technology are 'capture agents' that are placed within both the
unconverted and the converted code. The 'capture agents' then create 'capture files' at
execution, which TestSentinel quickly diffs for accuracy.
